Serial inventory
Serial inventory is an inventory pack with a quantity of one (1) piece. This typically usually applies to high-value items or items with critical traceability requirements, because low-value items can be grouped together into boxes or pallets, and it does not matter which piece from the box or pallet is used.
An example of this is building a car. The car has a vehicle identification number (VIN), this is the unique number to identify a specific car.
Another example is producing axles for vehicles. Each item is stamped with a unique QR code that enables the manufacturer and the vehicle assembly plant to trace and identify the axle during production, and also for traceability after the vehicle is sold to the consumer. The pieces are not high-value but do have critical traceability requirements.
