Silos

A silo is typically a large vessel which stores a single material at a time, for example, liquids or powders.

However, in Infor MES, a silo is a queue. Inventory packs are moved into a silo and sit at the back of the queue.

A single transaction is executed to consume from the silo. MES determines how many of the inventory packs in the queue to consume. This can include partially consuming a pack.

For example, if there is a silo with these inventory packs:

  • Inventory E: 50Kg
  • Inventory D: 100Kg
  • Inventory C: 200Kg
  • Inventory B: 50Kg
  • Inventory A: 100Kg

Then consuming 125Kg from this silo has this result:

  • Inventory A: Fully consumed
  • Inventory B: Partially consumed

Because a silo is just a queue, it can be used at a more abstract level to consume from a queue, even if the material is not strictly in a physical silo.
