Registering of Material in Bill of Material

This document explains how to define a bill of material with the material needed to manufacture the product after you have connected different attributes to the materials.

Outcome

A bill of material is created and, if necessary, attributes are connected to material:

  • Feature and option
  • Alternate material
  • Attribute values
  • Potency compensating item
  • Substitution table.

Drawing measurements can also be configured and printed to material.

The material in the bill of material have several purposes:

  • Consumption of material for planned manufacturing order in the material requirements planning (MRP) calculations, and MO in the production control.
  • Product calculation, where direct material is based on the quantity, waste, and price of the material.

These tables are affected:

  • Material (MPDMAT)
  • Rate compensator (MPDRCO)
  • Alternative material (MPDMAA)
  • Attribute values (MIATTR)
  • Requirement Order Attribute (MOATTR)
  • Product Database Materials (MPDMAT).

Before you start

  • Product structure types are defined in 'Product Structure Type. Open' (CRS087).
  • The product is defined as an item in 'Item. Open' (MMS001).
Note: Using parameters (function key F13='Parameters') enables you to control whether non-defined products are registered or not.

Follow these steps

  1. Register material.

This activity lists all the items that make up the product in the bill of material. It is created by specifying sequence number, component number, and quantity included.

Specify material in the bill of material in 'Product. Connect Materials/Operations' (PDS002).

  2. Connect alternate material.

This activity connects alternative material to the product. A number of materials can be suggested, arranged by priority of use.

Connect alternate material to the product in 'Material. Connect Alternate Materials' (PDS013).

  3. Select line based on configuration.
    • Connect feature/options

This activity connects attributes to a material. First, select a feature (example: color). Then, select an option (example: blue).

Features/options are connected to material in (PDS003).

    • Connect drawing measurement to material

This activity connects numerical attributes to a material, for example thickness from 10 mm to 15 mm.

Drawing measurements are connected to material in 'Material/Operation. Connect Drawing Meas' (PDS082).

  4. Connect attribute values, potency compensating item, and substitute for feature.
    • Connect substitute for feature

In this activity, a component that is defined as a style is replaced by its variant, depending on the features and options selected for the product. You can use styles/family products both as finished products and as components, but with changed substitution and explosion processing. The substitution table is used to translate product feature into material features.

You can explode a finished product with several features and options into semi-finished products with other features and options. This is done in 'Material. Connect Substitute Feature' (PDS360) and 'Material. Connect Substitute Options' (PDS361).

You can define default values for the substitution for features in 'Feature. Connect Substitute Feature' (PDS364).

You can define default values per option in 'Feature. Connect Substitute Options' (PDS365).

The substitution table of a component can be inherited from the product in standard structure type. This is done by setting the parameter 'Inherit Substitution Table' (ISBT) on (PDS002/F) to 1='Yes'. This field is only available for components in non-standard structure type. Product, material sequence number, from date, and style component must have the same values across structure types in order to retrieve the substitution table. When the ISBT value is set to 0='No', the substitution table is maintained in the current structure.

Optionally, you can also delete the source line when the material line is being copied on 'Product. Version' (PDS002/C) while checking on a new parameter called the 'Delete source line'. This parameter will be available to edit only for product structure headers with 'Maintained by external system' turned off. If ‘Maintained by external system’ is on, the source line will be automatically deleted during the copy.

    • Connect attribute values

This activity explains how you connect attribute values to a material. An attribute can be: color; blue + size; medium (connected to the item shirt sleeve).

    • Connect potency compensating item

If material quantity with different potency or concentration should be included in an item with a certain potency or concentration, the material must be registered as an active item. You do this in the 'Active item' field in 'Item. Open' (MMS001).

Using 'Material. Enter Potency Compensating Itm' (PDS004), you can specify compensators to adjust concentration.

Example: Mix 90% alcohol with water to get an alcohol concentration of 60% in the final product. If the concentration in the original liquid is changed to 80%, the water should automatically be reduced to get a correct concentration in the final product. In this case, water is the potency compensating material.

Potency compensating materials are connected to material in 'Material. Enter Potency Compensating Itm' (PDS004).
