Overlapping
Overlapping is when one or more operations in a manufacturing order are started before the previous operation(s) is completed.
In M3 overlapping is regulated in two fields, Queue unit per work center and Queue value in the queue and transportation time tables. This queue value can be overriden for each operation in thr routing. A queue value is the numerical value for each queue unit.
Queue units can be referred to in one of the following ways:
- Queue days – overlapping is specified by a negative number of queue days. That is, one operation has a planned start while there are still queue days remaining in the previous operation.
- Hours – overlapping is specified by a negative number of hours. In this case, the operation has a planned start while a specified number of hours remain to complete the previous operation.
- Percent – is always stated in positive values and always indicates overlapping. Here, the operation has a planned start for when a specified amount of time remains to complete the previous operation. If the overlapping is 100%, then the operations will be started at the same time.
- Quantity – is always stated in positive values and always indicates overlapping. Here, the operation has a planned start for when the time for a specified quantity in the previous operation has passed.
Description
Overlapping can be used for large quantity orders with low transportation costs. The main reason for using it is to shorten lead times for manufactured products.
