Managing Manufacturing Order Problems

This document explains the three different ways to solve common capacity and material problems:

  • Hold and release held manufacturing order (MO)
  • Split MO
  • Reclassify to subcontracting operation.

Outcome

An MO has been rescheduled. Capacity and/or material has been increased by reducing lead time, stopping transactions or moving work outside of a certain facility.

If the same problem occurs frequently, you should find a permanent solution. The need for each of the three activities can indicate a bottleneck, for example.

For more details on how the system is affected, refer to the listed documents in the See also section.

Follow These Steps

Outline
  1. Hold MO

Use this activity to stop all open operations on an MO. You can hold an MO for the short or long term before releasing it.

The material and work center load for a short-term held MO are still reserved. You specify in every program whether you want the held MO to be displayed in these programs:

    Display programs

    • 'Load. Display Totals' (CPS100/P)
    • 'Load. Display Detailed' (CPS105/P)
    • 'Load. Display per Product' (CPS110/P)
    • 'Load. Display Over & Under' (CPS120/P)
    • 'Load. Display Gantt Chart for MOs' (CPS130/P)
    • 'Load. Print' (CPS600/E).

    Dispatch program

    • 'Work Center Schedule. Open' (PMS230/P).

A long-term hold has removed work center load and material requirements from the MO in the material plan. The load and the material are no longer reserved for the operations on the long-term held MO, and are free to be reserved for another operation.

You hold MOs for the short or long term in 'Manufact Order. Open' (PMS100), or in 'Work Center Schedule. Open' (PMS230).

  2. Release Held MO

Use this activity when you are ready to start performing activities and reporting transactions on the MO again.

The released held MO will receive its original status, and the material plan and all loads will be updated as soon as the MO has been rescheduled. (See activity 5.)

You release held MOs in 'Manufact Order. Open' (PMS100).

  3. Split MO

Use this activity when you need an order quantity produced faster than the current schedule allows.

You specify the order quantity on the original MO, and a new identical order will be created for the remaining quantity. You also specify the start or finish date for the original MO.

You split MOs in 'Manufact Order. Split' (PMS055).

  4. Reclassify to Subcontracting Operation

Use this activity to subcontract the work do be done to an outside facility.

The original operation is replaced by a subcontracted operation and a purchase order (PO).

You reclassify an MO to a subcontracting operation in 'Manufact Order. Open Lines' (PMS101).

  5. Reschedule MO

Use this activity after holding, releasing held or splitting MOs, or when reclassifying operations. Rescheduling updates the material plan with all requirements and loads.

Changes to the number of items, start date, etc. can be made before rescheduling.

You reschedule MOs in 'Manufact Order. Reschedule' (PMS010).
