Enter Work Center

This procedure is used to enter or change a maintenance work center, thereby processing work center information and costs.

A maintenance work center is normally people based and will be a group of craftsmen, such as mechanics or technicians.

Outcome

This procedure results in either creating or updating work centers and related costs. Additionally, a capacity calendar is created for each work center.

Note: Work center costs should also be defined.

Before you start

  • Departments must be created in 'Department. Open' (CRS080).
  • Planning areas must be created in 'Planning Area. Open' (CRS085).
  • Cost components must be created in 'Costing Component. Open' (PCS010).
  • If shifts are to be used, they must be created in 'Shift Pattern. Open' (PDS033)
  • A system calendar must be defined in 'System Calendar. Open' (CRS900) and periods must be defined across all divisions in 'System Calendar. Open Period' CRS910).

Follow these steps

  1. Start 'Work Center. Open' (PDS010/B).

  2. Set panel sequence EFG and specify a facility.

  3. Create the work center by specifying a work center identity. Select New to display the E panel.

  4. Specify a work center name. This will default as operation description.

  5. If this work center is part of another work center, the identity of that work center can be specified. Also specify a department and a planning area. The department and planning area are used in a number of planning components to view, for example, all orders belonging to a particular department.

  6. Specify a resource type and a work center type. The resource type is usually set to 1 or 9 (9 cannot be used when M3 Scheduling Workbench (SWB) is used) for internal work. 2 is used for subcontract work centers. For Plant Maintenance, 9 is the recommended setting.

The work center type can be used to update the work center on a work request based on the facility that the request was created in. This feature operates with consolidated facilities.

For example, work center PAINTING was created for the consolidated facility and applied to the service. Work centers PAINT1, PAINT2, and PAINT3 were then created in three separate facilities, AAA, BBB, CCC, respectively, but all three were linked to a work center type PAINTING. When the system creates the work request on facility AAA, the PAINTING work center is changed automatically to PAINT1. Work center types are therefore defined as work centers against the consolidated facility.

  7. Set the quality inspection to No and a blank production line. Also select cost accounting.

  8. If parameter 210 in (CAS900) is selected, a cost center must be selected. This functions as an override for purchasing. If left blank, the accounting in (CRS935) is used. Also specify the capacity. This will usually be the total available number of hours per day, such as 7.5.

  9. Specify the capacity type, normally 2 for man-hours, and a shift pattern if shifts are used.

  10. Specify the number of people that are available within the work center per day/shift and the number of shifts per day. Also specify the likely utilization rate. This helps planning as 100 percent utilization is normally impossible to achieve.

  11. Specify the planning horizon in days. This indicates that the number of days forward planning should be used regarding load. 600 is normal.

  12. Specify a daily and a weekly load level. These fields indicate the number of days and weeks ahead that resource planning should be available. If 30 is specified as daily load, then the load can be seen on a daily basis for the next 30 days. If then, the weekly load level is set to 100, the workload for this work center can be seen on a weekly level from day 31 to day 600 (the end of the planning horizon).

  13. Specify whether efficiency control should be used and a production rate code. The efficiency control defines whether the efficiency factor should be included in the load calculation. The production rate code decides if and how the production rate should be displayed. Press Enter to display the F panel.

  14. Specify whether auto receipt should be used. When set, work orders will be offered for closure in (MOS050) after the last operation is reported. Also specify whether operations need to be verified before they are closed. If activated, operations need to be approved before they can achieve status 90.

  15. Specify a warehouse. This is required for the control of repairable equipment and IAC equipment such as motors. When an IAC item is issued from the warehouse, it should be moved to a transport or repair location (usually the same as defined in (CRS788/E)). This is the warehouse that location is within. This warehouse will be a real warehouse such as the maintenance stores. Also specify a location. As above for warehouse, this will be a valid location within that warehouse. This location will have its "status for proposals" parameter set to 1 or 3 (not 2). It is from this location that (MOS125) will retrieve the IAC item and install it into the plant structure.

  16. Specify a load reduction method. The load reduction controls how the remaining time left on an operation should be shown in planning components. For example, a new operation may show a requirement for 100 hours, but halfway through the job, the system should not show a requirement of 100 hours but the remaining hours of, say, 50 hours. In this case, method 2 should be selected. This subtracts the reported hours from the planned hours and therefore provides the remaining hours for planning purposes.

  17. Specify whether overload can be created for the work center. This determines whether overload can be created for the work center. If M3 SWB is in use, then finite capacity should be used.

  18. Specify the number of days in advance before the WO operation start date for which material requirements should be reserved. Press Enter to display the G panel.

  19. The operation description permits a default description to be specified onto each operation created against this work center. This will default from the work center name. Also specify a default planned number of workers and a planned number of workers to set up the operation. This provides a default for the number of people required for an operation raised against this work center. In maintenance, this would be set to 1 (as in most operations, there would be at least one person).

  20. Specify setup and work times. These are normally set to 0 since all jobs are different.

  21. Set a time U/M in which time is specified. This is normally 1 for hours, or 2 for minutes.

  22. Specify a price decimal place to indicate the number of decimals used for the unit price. Press Enter to save.
