Equipment Number
The equipment number is the main reference to a physical item of plant or equipment. This number is used extensively throughout M3.
The number will vary depending on the installation and may be pre-defined, based on a existing system. If developing a new numbering system, a great deal of thought should be given to its structure.
Description
For equipment which is unlikely to move or where history of unique equipment is not required (large reactors, a freezer etc.), the equipment number may be structured according to its location within the factory or site.
For equipment which can be moved or is interchangeable (motors, gearboxes etc.), the number is likely to be some form of serial number. In this case, it is important to fix the number firmly onto the equipment.

For equipment that can be held in the stores and used on site, the equipment number is likely to be the store’s stock number. For example: Ten identical motors held in stock will have the same equipment number, which is equal to the stock number. But the serial number will make it unique.
The structure of equipment numbers can be defined in 'Standard Numbering System. Open' (CRS247). The necessary structure will be automatically suggested and validated where appropriate.
