Create Standard Numbering System

This procedure should be used when creating a new standard numbering system.

Standard numbering systems (CRS247) provide a template and validation for coding positions and equipment records. The standard numbering system defines the structure of the code and the expected range of values. A standard numbering system must exist at all installations, even if the numbering system is classed as unstructured.

The result will be a defined numbering system structure that can be used for positions and equipment. Noteā€¦ structured numbering

Before you start

There are no prerequisites for this procedure.

Follow these steps

Define a standard numbering system

  1. Select 'Standard Numbering System. Open' (CRS247) and define the numbering system.

  2. Define the levels of the structure, including the valid ranges of codes in Work with Standard Numbering Levels (CRS248).

From this point, the process can be divided into two stages.

Stage One is to define the standard numbering system in Standard Numbering Systems (CRS247).

  1. Select panel E and sorting order 1.

  2. In the Number system field (Nsy), enter the single character code that will be used to identify the numbering system. This is an alphanumeric code.

  3. Press New. The default status is 20.

  4. Enter the description of the Numbering system. The name will automatically have a default value from the description, but may be truncated.

  5. The Significance Number indicates if the numbering system is to be structured or unstructured.

  6. Enter the level logic if the significance number has been selected. Press Enter to save.

Stage Two is to define the standard numbering levels in Work with Standard Numbering Levels.

  1. Select 'Standard Numbering System. Open' (CRS247). Highlight the code to which numbering levels will be attached and select Standard numbering system levels, option 11.

  2. Enter the numbering level in the appropriate field (Nlv). This must begin with 01 and continue with 02, 03 etc. Do not be confused by the fact that level logic began at zero in the previous section. In this case, level 0 in level logic refers to numbering level 01 here. The numeral one (1) in level logic referrers to 02 here, and so on.

  3. Press New. The default status is 20.

  4. Enter the description of the Numbering system level. Note: This description will be automatically suggested as a default value in position and equipment records during their creation processes. This provides a guide to both the structure and the format. The name will automatically have a default from the description but may be truncated.

  5. The Check Item File flag defines whether a check on the format of the position code should be made against the item file or against the standard numbering system format. As this check is at the individual level of the item number, it is possible to validate the first few characters against the item file and then the remainder of the code against the structured numbering format.

  6. Define the start point in the code where this validation should begin in Start Position. Similarly, define the end point in End Position.

  7. Enter the first valid code that will be permitted in Range From and the last valid code in Range ToPress Enter to save.

This procedure will then continue if additional levels are required.
