Adding a category

To establish a category:

  1. Log on to the Business Center as a merchant administrator.

  2. Click the Items > Categories link in the navigator.

  3. Click Create New.

To be able to view the changes made, ensure that the Category.UpdateExplosions, Item.GenerateVisibility, and Lucene.Index jobs are executed.

  1. On the Category Details page, make the following settings:

    Category details Description
Category A name that will be easily recognizable to users of the Business Center; this name will never appear in the Customer Center.
Internal Name Enter a name for the category that will be easily recognizable to users of the Business Center; this name will never appear in the Customer Center.
Category Type Set this to "Normal category".
CSS Class Enter the name of the styling class to be applied for the category. In the B2C setup, you can specify styling for individual categories. This styling is applied for the current category page in the Customer Center. If a styling class is not specified for the current category, the styling class of its parent category is applied. This field is visible only in the B2C setup.
Descriptions Specify the name of the category in each language supported by your application.

For existing categories, the Category Details page is different for each category type and that you are only able to define the Internal Name and Category Type when first creating a category.)

  2. Click Create to submit your settings so far.

The page reloads showing the settings appropriate for your selected category type (Normal category).

  3. Make the following settings:

    Settings Description
Parent Category If you are creating a browseable category, then you might enter the category ID of a parent category here, or click Find to search a category by name. Categories without a parent will appear at the top of the browse hierarchy; categories with a parent appears only when viewing the parent category. A parent category can contain either sub-categories or item, not both (when browsing, the category will not display any item if it has one or more sub-categories).
Visible Set this to "Yes" if you want the category to appear when browsing the Customer Center. Set this to "No" if you do not want the categories to appear. Often, categories that you create for grouping sub-items will be non-browseable (as with the wireless networking category, in the computer-system example discussed at the start of this section).
  4. Click Save to finish creating the category.
