Configure the basic settings for operations.

Connecting a component to a data service

Note: Before you connect a component to a data service, create at least one data service. To do this, click Manage Data Services of the editor, and then click + Add data service.
  1. Open the component configuration by clicking Configure.
  2. Navigate to the Operations tab.
  3. In the Standard tab, specify this information to configure the operation:
    Operations type
    Select the type of operation, such as Read, Update, Delete, Submit, Open. The available types depend on the component.
    Data service
    Select a data service. The component uses this data service when the operation is triggered by an interaction.
  4. Click Save.

Adding a custom operation

Experience Designer supports standard operations and custom operations for several components. With custom operations, you can connect a named operation to a data service and trigger the operation from a toolbar button or a button component.

Typical use cases include:

  • Update the status of selected records by using a button.
  • Copy or create records directly from a component.
  1. Open the component configuration by clicking Configure.
  2. Navigate to the Operations tab, and in the Custom sub-tab, click + Add.
  3. Specify this information to configure the operation:
    Name
    Specify a name for the custom operation. This name is used to identify the operation when configuring interactions.
    Data service
    Select the data service to use for the custom operation.
  4. Click Save.

Operation examples

Example use cases of operations include reading data to a form, running an update from a button, and opening a dialog.

Reading data into a form or data grid

  1. Create a data service by using MI, LISTMI, or API Gateway.
  2. Configure the transaction inputs and outputs.
  3. Connect the data service to the Read operation of the component.
  4. Add an interaction that triggers Read on Application Load or when a record is selected in another component.
  5. Add fields or columns from the data service output.

Running an update from a button

  1. Create a data service with an update transaction.
  2. Add a toolbar button to the component.
  3. Create a custom operation or use the standard Update operation if suitable.
  4. Connect the data service to the operation.
  5. Create an interaction in which clicking the button triggers the operation.

Opening and submitting a dialog

  1. Create the dialog.
  2. Add a toolbar button to the component.
  3. Connect a data service to the dialog’s Submit operation.
  4. Create an interaction for a button that uses the Click event and the Open operation.
  5. Configure field initial values and data service inputs as needed.
