Understanding content updates
Standard Meta Data (SMD) is the mechanism used in updating the standard Birst content application. The latest version of the standard content is provisioned as a separate application from the existing standard content application.
- The latest version of the standard content application is called SMD Application.
- The existing version of the standard content application is called Active Application.
When the application is initially provisioned, two sets of content applications are deployed. A read-only (SMD) application and an Active application that consists of spaces and workflows that are customizable and available for use.
When a new version is available, the existing SMD application will be deleted and replaced by the newly released M3 Analytics version. They can choose to copy the latest updates from the SMD application onto their Active content application using the updated SMD content. This approach ensures that the update causes no disruptions to the customer’s live application.
The SMD application resources are only available for the Birst System Administrator role. A Birst System Admin can trigger SMD Application Workflow/s to apply updates from SMD application to the active application. See Update process.
The different spaces and space classes are described in Understanding tenant space classes.
Depending on the changes introduced with the update, you might have to reload the data.
