Enumeration Verification (PR293)

Run Enumeration Verification (PR293) to create or verify a magnetic media file of social security number information.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) provides Enumeration Verification System (EVS) service to verify that a given social security number is assigned to the individual whose name you submit. This insures that your employee records are correct when you create your W-2 forms and report wages to government agencies.

Processing effect

When you run PR293 with the report option Create, you create a magnetic media file named evs-ssn in the print directory:

$LAWDIR/print/username/jobname/step nbr/evs-ssn (UNIX)

/LAWDIR/print/username/jobname/step nbr/evs-ssn (IBM i)

You also create the following reports:

  • An evs-form report, which you must print, fill out, and send to the SSA along with the magnetic media.
  • An employee listing, which lists all the employees included in the magnetic media file. If this report includes less than 50 employees, you can print it and send it to the SSA instead of the magnetic media.
  • A warning report, which you should review before you send the data to the SSA.

When you transfer the file onto your magnetic media, you MUST rename the file to SSA specifications. For magnetic media specifications, refer to your Social Security Administration (SSA) Enumeration Verification publication.

After the SSA verifies the numbers on your magnetic media, the SSA returns the magnetic media to you. You copy the magnetic media file to:

$LAWDIR/productline/work/SSN-EVS/SSN-EVS (UNIX)

/LAWDIR/productline/work/SSN-EVS/SSN-EVS (IBM i)

You run PR293 to view the verified file. You have two report options you can use to view the verified file:

  • Verify, which lists all the social security numbers (SSN) on file with the SSA.
  • Summary, which lists only the SSNs that encountered problems when the SSA verified them.
