Merchant Category Code
A merchant category code (MCC) is a four-digit, universal code assigned to merchants who accept credit cards. The MCC code identifies the kind of goods they sell. For example, the MCC code for a grocery store could be #5411, for grocery stores and supermarkets.
When administrators optionally assign merchant groups (including MCC codes) to P-Cards, it restricts the card use to the merchants in the group.
When setting up a merchant group, you indicate whether to identify merchants by name or MCC code. If you identify them by name, then bank charges are only accepted for a merchant with that name. If you identify them by MCC code, then for each purchase made using the P-Card, the MCC code of the merchant and that assigned to the P-Card are compared. If they are not the same, the purchase is not allowed.
