Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) Overview

Operational data is updated to the data warehouse using a process called ETL (Extract, Transform, Load).

The ETL process runs from a compiled DWD solution that you either compile from an imported BMM or design and compile yourself using DWD Designer.

The term Extract applies to the process of extracting operational data from the data sources to the staging database. The data is then transformed and filtered (if necessary) using compiled DWD Designer components created and stored in the DWD catalog. The transformed data is loaded into a data mart in the warehouse. Using SQL Analysis Services, OLAP cubes are created to provide the user-requested views of the data.
