Managing Relations

M3 metadata has many relations within and between columns and tables. These relations are imported with the metadata. This means that, when you create a composer, DWD automatically suggests the relations within the composer. However, you must manually create the relations from the fact table composer to the dimension table composers and between the fact table and the dimension tables.

Identify the names of the objects to be related. The relation manager helps you to locate the objects in the DWD repository. If you are setting up a relation between a tables that do not yet exist, create the table(s) first and then create the relation using this procedure.

Manage relations

  1. On the DWD Designer, select Design > Relations Manager.
  2. Select a catalog or data mart from the Systems list.
  3. Select Scope from the drop-down list.
  4. Select an object from the left pane to show existing relations on the right pane.
  5. To add a relation, click the Add a New Relation from Selected Object button.

The Relation Manager replaces the right-side tree with a tri-panel pane that contain:

    • The tables to be related with their relation (if one is possible)

    • A pseudo SQL expression of the tables and their relation(s)

    • A table of keys.

  6. To delete a relation, click the red X button.
  7. To modify a relation, click Edit.
  8. To swap relations, click Swap the relation button.
  9. To view all relations on the current system, click Check the Relations in this System.
