Exploding work orders

When the work order status is changed to exploded, the work order is broken into its component parts.

There are three ways to explode work orders:

  1. creating exploded work orders during production scheduling

  2. manually exploding work orders

  3. exploding several work orders by running a batch program

Explosion adds several things to a work order, including:

  • components, extended quantities, and burdens

  • byproducts and notes attached to components, burdens, and byproducts

Component inventory is allocated when the work order is exploded and the application also calculates the costs associated with that work order.

Example

This table uses an example to show how components are added to a work order during explosion. For example, if you create a work order to produce 50 red bicycles, the components are added to the work order in these quantities

Bicycle component Finished good component Exploded work order
Frame and fork assembly (red) 1 each 50 each
Handlebar 1 each 50 each
Spoke wheel, front 1 each 50 each
Geared spoke wheel, rear 1 each 50 each
Racing tire 2 each 100 each
Wheel reflector 4 each 200 each
Gel seat 1 each 50 each
Link chain 1 each 50 each
Pedal crank with bearings 1 each 50 each
Metal pedal 2 each 100 each
