Verifying the bank tape file

Before you can verify the bank tape file, you must receive the bank tape file from the bank.

When you run Bank Reconciliation Tape Processing (PR165) Payroll reads information from an electronic bank file and compares it to the Employee Payment file. Before reconciling payments automatically, you must verify that the tape file is in the proper format.

For Bank Reconciliation Tape Processing (PR165) to read a tape file received from the bank, you must verify the data.

Verify the bank tape file

  1. Access the bank tape file.
  2. Verify the data in one of these two ways:
    • Verify that the data adheres to this layout:

      Field name Type Size
      BNK-ACCT-NBR Alpha 17
      SERIAL-NBR Numeric 10
      FILL Alpha 1
      DATE-PAID Numeric 6 (mmddyy)
      AMOUNT Numeric 12
    • Access the workdef environment form to view the file layout and select Enter, or make the appropriate selection:

      1. Product Line

      2. System Code (PR)

      3. Program Code (PR165)

      4. File Name (TAPE)

After completing these fields, the predefined layout will display, and you can verify that the bank tape layout is correct.

  3. For either tape file verification option, if the bank's tape file is not in the correct format, then you must reformat the data to meet the necessary layout.

Another way is to modify the file layout in Payroll to meet the bank's format.

Note: We recommend that you do not modify the file layout.
  4. Once you have verified the format of the tape file, name the tape file as TPR165 and place the file in this path:

    For UNIX clients:

    $LAWDIR/productline/work/TPR165/

    For Windows clients:

    %LAWDIR%\productline\work\TPR165\

    For IBMi clients:

    LAWDIR/productline/work/TPR165/
