Grade range schedules

Grade range schedules are used for wage analysis. A grade range schedule is a table containing a number of pay-rate ranges. Each pay-rate range is referred to as a grade. Each grade range has a minimum, midpoint, and maximum salary. A salary is entered either as an annual amount or an hourly rate. Each grade represents different salaries based on experience, qualifications, location, and so on.

When a salary for a grade range changes, add a new schedule with the effective date of the new rates. If you add a new schedule, Personnel Administration keeps a history record of the old pay ranges.

Grade range schedules are different than step and grade schedules. You cannot assign an employee to both. Step and grade schedules are defined in the Payroll application.

For ease of data maintenance, a schedule and grade can be assigned to a job code, to an employee, or both. The following list explains your choices.

  • If all employees with a job code use the same schedule and grade for wage analysis, assign a schedule and grade to the job code.

  • If all employees with a job code use the same schedule but each employee's pay rate for wage analysis is different (because of experience, location, division, and so on), assign a schedule to the job code and a grade to each employee.

  • If all employees have a unique schedule and grade, assign a schedule and grade to each employee.

The following examples give different ways to assign schedules and grades.
