Translating a Message

Message translation lets you translate the text of informational messages.

Note: Do not change message text using the Message Definition utility (msgmnt), as each cyclical release overwrites these messages.

For more information, see the section The Language Definition Utility and the Language Definition Form and Messages.

To translate a message

  1. On the Language Definition form, select a language other than U. S. English.
  2. Press Xlate (F6) and select Messages.
  3. From the Messages menu, choose Application to translate an application message.

    - or -

Choose Environment to translate an Environment message.

The Message Translation form or the Environment Message Translation form appears.

    • If you chose Application, then on the Message Translation form in the Product Line field, type or select the product line to translate application messages for.

  4. Select the Message Translation or Translation field next to the message to be translated and type your translation of the message.

If the Message Translation form does not have enough space to display the translation of the message, press Define (F6) to use the Extended Message Translation subform.

    1. Type the extended translation for the message.
    2. Press Enter.

The Extended Message Translation subform closes. If the extended translation is longer than the Message Translation form can display, a right arrow appears at the end of the field to indicate that an extended translation is defined.

  5. For application messages, press Enter twice to save the translations and then press Esc to return to the Language Definition form. For Environment messages, press Enter twice to save the translations. The Language Definition form then returns.
