Defining Key Numbers

Use this procedure to define a new key number.

To define a new key number

  1. In the Key Nbr field in the Form Input Field Definition window or the Form Output Field Definition window, type the new key number, press Define (F6), and choose Key Number.

The Key Number Definition window appears with the product line and key number displayed.

  2. In the Key Name field, type a name to identify the key number field. This name does not have to be the database field name.
  3. Optional. In the Super Type field, type the key number of the field of which this field is a subtype.

For example, the Personnel Administration system stores many kinds of personnel codes (key number PC) in a single file. Two kinds of personnel codes are benefit codes (key number PCB) and dependent codes (key number PCD). Benefit codes and dependent codes are subtypes of personnel codes. Because benefit and dependent codes have their own key number, you can define specific rules for them. They also need a super-type key number for inter-form communication with forms that have a Personnel Code field.

  4. Press OK to save the key number definition and return to the window from which you pressed Define (F6).
