Translating a Phrase

Phrase translation lets you translate field labels, form tab labels, bookmark phrases, button labels, and single-line column headings.

Note: Phrase translation is not associated with a product line.

To translate a phrase

  1. On the Language Definition form, select a language other than U. S. English.
  2. Press Xlate (F6) and select Phrases.

    The Phrase Translation form appears. The Phrase column is the existing phrase for the language being translated. For example, if Spanish is defined as a language, and Mexican as a dialect, the Phrase column displays the Spanish phrase already translated, not U.S. English.

    Note: To help you find the forms that use the phrase, and the number of characters in the phrase, press Detail (F5) and select Where Used.
  3. Select the Long Translation field next to the phrase to be translated and type your translation of the phrase.
  4. Optional. If you want to define a short translation in addition to the long translation, press Define (F6) and choose Translation.

    The Extended Phrase Translation subform appears with the phrase and its long translation displayed.

    1. In the Short Translation field, type the short version of the long translation.

      The short translation is used in situations where there is not enough space for the long translation.

    2. Press Enter.

      The Extended Phrase Translation subform closes.

  5. Optional. If you want to override the phrase translation on a specific form, press Define (F6) and choose Override Translation.

    The Override Phrase Translation form appears with the chosen language, the phrase, and its translation displayed.

    1. In the Form ID field, type or select the form ID of the form on which to override the phrase translation.
    2. In the Override Translation field, type the phrase translation you want to appear on the selected form.
    3. To define a short translation for the phrase, press Define (F6).

      The Extended Phrase Translation subform appears with the long phrase translation displayed. In the Short Translation field, type the shortened version of the long translation and then press Enter to save the short translation.

    4. Press Enter twice to save the translation override.

      The Phrase Translation form returns.

  6. Press Enter twice to save the translations.

    The Language Definition form returns.

    Note: The next time you access the Phrase Translation form for the chosen language or dialect, the phrases with a short translation display Yes in the Short Translation field.
