Groups

A group is a set of resources in an organization that you want to view as a unit.

Setup of groups in Resource Management is completely flexible and it is up to you to decide what groups will exist. Some companies might choose to organize groups by department, such as Human Resources (HR), IS Support, or Payroll. Other ad hoc groups might be formed to focus on a particular project.

Groups can be useful for maintaining security. If it makes sense for your company, you can specify security for a group. You can also let department heads control their own groups. You would do this by giving access to the Resource Management Administrator to department heads and letting them use it to create the groups they need and select users who should be members of them.

Groups are not the same as roles although, depending on how your company is structured, some groups might serve a similar purpose as roles. The difference is that roles are based on tasks that users do in order to perform in a role. A role might or might not have any relationship to a group of users. For example, if you use Lawson Self-Service applications, you might create a role called Manager Self-Service that would be assigned to all persons who have direct reports, because all managers must perform the basic functions provided by Manager Self-Service. You might also have an Employee Self-Service role that you assign to all users (including managers) because this role provides access to all the basic functions that all employees at your site need. You might decide that for reasons unrelated to Manager Self-Service that you want to create a group for all managers in your company. You could create this group through Resource Management. The members of the manager group would be the same persons who were assigned the Manager Self-Service role, but the group could be used for different purposes.

Bookmark groups

Creating or using other existing groups for assignment of bookmarks is a procedure most customers perform. This makes assigning bookmarks, an administration task performed in Lawson Portal, much easier. The bookmark group information is stored in Resource Management.
