Resource Utilization (plaps8505m000)

Use this session to view critical bottleneck resources in an unconstrained or infinite capacity mode to determine if there is enough aggregate capacity to meet the production plan objectives. After leveling the production plan, you can use the detailed views to see which orders are handled during a particular time period.

You can view the capacity usage over a period for specific resources. Resources are unconstrained, constrained within a time fence, or fully constrained. The Resource Utilization graph displays the percentage of resource utilization for constrained or unconstrained resource types. You can use view the number of days on which there are overloaded resources.

Resource Utilization – Filters

The resources are displayed in a tree structure, categorized by site. You can select one or more resource to view the utilization percentage over a period of time.

Resource Utilization – Graph

The plotting area consists of two axes. The vertical axis indicates a percentage scale, while the horizontal axis displays the dates against which the utilization percentage is displayed for a resource.

You can select the show a global view of the load on resources option in this session to access the global view of the resource utilization graph. In this view, every resource is plotted as a line in the graph in a unique color. By default, the series have points that line up with each of the time horizon's buckets. The highest point of the curve indicates the number of days on which there are overloaded resources, and the capacity you have used. You can hover over a point of the line in the graph to view these details:
  • Utilization percentage
  • Resource
  • Site
  • Available
  • Date

You can select the show a detailed view of the load on resources option in this session to access the detailed view of the load on the resource. In the detailed view, the vertical axis indicates an hourly scale. You can change the vertical axis to a percentage scale by right-clicking the graph and selecting View Mode > Percentage. A yellow overload threshold line is displayed horizontally across the plotting area. If the data related to a resource goes beyond this threshold line, the resource is overloaded. You set the overload threshold percentage in the Resource Utilization Options (plaps0181m000) session.

In the detailed view, you can view four types of information by right clicking the graph and selecting View Type:
  • Setup vs Production displays the proportion of capacity used for setup and production.
  • Lateness Type displays the proportion of capacity used for producing early, on-time, and late orders.
  • Order Status displays the proportion of capacity used for producing planned, firm planned and released orders.
  • Allocation Type displays the proportion of capacity used to fulfil customer orders, warehouse demand, or other order types.
You can view two types of buffer information in the detailed view of the graph:
  • Time: The average buffer time of all operations that are planned to start on that day. The average buffer time is the difference between the ready-to-start date and the actual start date.
  • Average Work Buffer: The extra hours of work available for a resource at a given time.
Note: You can use the Average Work Buffer type only when the graph is grouped by day.

Resource Utilization – Grid

The grid displays a time-phased view of the resources linked to the selected sites and the data related to availability, utilization, overload, setup, and production of the resources.

Resource Utilization – Consolidated View

You can enable the consolidated view of the capacity and overload of the resources by selecting the Hide/Show Indicator toggle. The Capacity pane displays the total available capacity in hours, used capacity, and utilization percentage of the resource.

The Overload pane displays the total duration of resource overload along with the maximum and average values.

Resource Utilization – Options

To change the view and mode of the graph in the detailed mode, you can right-click the plotting area to view the related options. You can use the Resource Utilization Options (plaps0181m000) session to define the default settings for the time horizon, resource filters, constraint types, lateness variation, and the color legend, based on which the resource utilization session is displayed.
