Integration Manufacturing and Document Management

In Manufacturing, you can link a document to an object using Document Management. A document can be linked to bill of material (BOM) lines, production items, or production order headers, among other objects. The documents attached to the object documentation can provide important information such as instructions for job shop operators about how to work with the object.

Note: If multisite is activated for the company for which you are managing documents, documents are linked to a bill of material for an item on site level.

Linking documents

To link a document to an object, take the following steps:

  1. Save the file(s) in your work area. Your work area and its path is defined in the Areas (dmdoc5120m000) session.
  2. Select the object to which you want to link a document. For example, if you want to link a document to a BOM line, select the BOM line in the Bill of Material (tibom1110m000) session. If you want to link a document to a production item, select an item in the Item - Production (tiipd0101m000) session.
  3. Click the paperclip in the toolbar.
  4. Click File Linking.
  5. Use the File Linking (dmdoc4540m002) session to link the document to the object.

If you linked a document to an object, you can view, edit, print, or e-mail the linked files. Carry out the following steps:

  1. Select the object such as the BOM line, (production) item, or production order.
  2. Click the paperclip in the toolbar.
  3. Click Launch Main File(s) to open the file.

Inheriting document links

If you link a document to an object, you can view, edit, and print the files attached to the document throughout the object's life cycle. When you link a document to a production item, you can access the document when the item is used in a bill of material (BOM) because it has inherited the production item's document.

The documents and document links can be copied to and pasted from other LN packages during the execution of the business process. You can specify and update new related objects in the Related Objects (dmsys1113m000) session.

If you linked a document to an object and you want to view or edit while the item is used in a BOM:

  1. Select the object, for example, the BOM line where the item is used.
  2. Click the paperclip in the toolbar.
  3. Click Document Rev.
  4. Select the document (revision) concerned, and go to the appropriate menu. You can now choose what to do with the document: Edit File, View File, Print File, or E-mail.
