Reference designators and MBCs

You can use the MBC Action (tiedm3120m000) session to define actions to replace, add, or delete items in an EBOM. If desired, you can also use an MBC action to replace, add, or delete the reference designators in the EBOM. The MBC Action at Ref. Designator Level check box in the MBC Action (tiedm3120m000) session determines whether you can define MBC actions for reference designators.

MBC Action at Ref. Designator Level check box

If, in the MBC Action (tiedm3120m000) details session, the MBC Action at Ref. Designator Level check box is cleared, you cannot replace, add, or delete specific reference designators in an EBOM. If reference designators are present in the 'old' EBOM, the reference designators are simply transferred to the new EBOM.

If, in the MBC Action (tiedm3120m000) details session, the MBC Action at Ref. Designator Level check box is selected, you must define an MBC action on the level of reference designators. Just as for items in the EBOM, you can define three types of MBC actions for reference designators, namely:

  • Replace

You can use an MBC of the Replace type to replace an item and/or reference designator in an EBOM by another item and/or reference designator.

    Example 1

    • MBC Action at Ref. Designator Level check box is cleared. Note that you cannot enter reference designators if the check box is cleared.
    • Old component: Y
    • Old reference designator: ---
    • New component: Z
    • New reference designator: ---

    Example 2

    • MBC Action at Ref. Designator Level check box is selected. Note that you must enter reference designators if the check box is selected.
    • Old component: Y
    • Old reference designator: RD1
    • New component: Z
    • New reference designator: RD4

The previous examples are replacements, in which the old quantity equals the new quantity. In that case, the Replace Type field in the MBC Action (tiedm3120m000) details session is = (Adoption). However, also other replace types are possible: + (Addition), / (Division), * (Multiplication), and - (Subtraction). If the replace type is * (Multiplication), reference designators are handled as follows:

    Example 3

    • MBC Action at Ref. Designator Level check box is selected
    • Replace type is * (Multiplication)
    • Old component: Y
    • Old reference designator: RD1
    • New component: Z
    • New reference designator: RD4
    • Quantity: 3

  • Add

In case of an addition, an item and/or reference designator is added to an EBOM.

    Example 4

    • MBC Action at Ref. Designator Level check box is selected
    • New component: Z
    • New reference designator: RD4
    • Quantity: 1

    Example 5

    • MBC Action at Ref. Designator Level check box is cleared.
    • New component: Z
    • New reference designator: ---
    • Quantity: 1

  • Delete

In case of a deletion, an item and/or reference designator is deleted from the EBOM. The quantity is never specified.

    Example 6

    • MBC Action at Ref. Designator Level check box is selected
    • Old component: Y
    • Old reference designator: RD3

    Example 7

    • MBC Action at Ref. Designator Level check box is cleared
    • Old component: Y
    • Old reference designator: ---
