Package Definition Levels (whwmd4120s000)

Use this session to create, view or change the structure of the generic package definition levels.

When you insert a new level in the Package Definition Levels (whwmd4520m000) session, the next level number is generated. Each level is an inventory unit. The lowest level must be the base inventory unit for the item(s) that will be linked to the package definition.

For each level of the package definition, enter the packaging details and the dimensions of the package. You can also enter a packaging item. The following data are taken as default from the packaging item:

  • Package Type
  • Shippable
  • Weight
  • Length
  • Width
  • Height

If no packaging item is entered, these values can be defined freely for any packaging level.

At level 1, the Exists for Partial Quantity field is cleared and cannot be edited by the user.

Field Information

Package Definition

The code of the package definition.

Level

The level number of the packaging level.

The level numbers start at 1 for the lowest level and increase sequentially without gaps. Each higher level holds or contains the package unit that is at the level immediately before it.

For example, the lowest level can be pieces, the next level is a box that contains 10 pieces, and the highest level is a pallet that holds 20 boxes.

Example

  • level 1: pieces
  • level 2: bx1 (box of 10 pieces)
  • level 3: pl1 (pallet of 20 bx1 = 200 pieces)
Unit

A unit of packaging in which an item can exist: for example a piece, a box, or a pallet.

This unit serves as the package in which, or on which, an item is stored or handled. On the lowest level, this unit is the inventory unit for the item.

Besides the base unit, a unit can appear in only one package definition for each item.

The unit must be defined in the item's unit set.

Packaging Item

The packaging item (such as supports and containers) that are used to hold goods within the warehouse and the distribution chain. The packaging item can be associated to a unit defined at the package definition level. The same packaging item can be associated to several package definition levels (units).

The following data are taken as default from the packaging item:

  • Package Type
  • Shippable
  • Weight
  • Length
  • Width
  • Height

The values of these fields are retrieved from the Packaging Items (whwmd4105s000) session and cannot be edited by the user.

If no packaging item is entered, you can enter specific packaging data.

Packaging items can be marked as reusable. When package levels are associated with packaging items that are reusable, the quantity of the packaging items received into and shipped from the warehouse will be tracked for each business partner using the Packaging Items by Business Partner (whwmd4107m000) session.

Location Type

The location type where the package can be stored.

Note: Only values Pick and Bulk apply from the list shown below.
Package Type

The package type defines whether goods are stored inside the packaging materials or externally on the packaging materials. This information enables LN to have accurate dimensions of goods that are packaged according to the package definition.

Exists for Partial Quantity

If this check box is selected, the package is regarded as existing even when its content is partial.

Example

When a box is picked from a pallet, the pallet still exists in the location with the remaining quantity. Therefore, the pallet exists for partial quantities. However, for specific types of boxes, when pieces are picked from the box, the box is discarded and the remaining pieces must be represented as pieces. In such cases, the box does not exist for partial quantities.

Shippable

If this check box is selected, the package is suitable for shipment without being repacked. For example, pallets are generally a shippable type of packaging.

If this check box is cleared, the package is not shippable in its present form. For example, a fragile package or many types of loose pieces cannot be shipped without first repackaging them.

Weight

The weight of the empty package expressed in the location weight unit of measure. This weight does not include the weight of the item in the package.

Allowed values

0 - 99999999.99

Default value

0

Note: The location weight unit of measure is defined in the Warehouse Master Data Parameters (whwmd0100s000) session.
Floor Space

The Floor Space of an item. The Floor Space is equal to Length multiplied with the Width of the Packaging Item. It is expressed and rounded in the Length unit.

Length

The outer length of the package.

Allowed values

0 - 999999.99

Default value

0

Length

The unit in which the length is measured. The unit of measure is defined in the Warehouse Master Data Parameters (whwmd0100s000) session.

Width

The outer width of the package expressed in the location length unit of measure.

Allowed values

0 - 999999.99

Default value

0

Width

The unit in which the width is measured. The unit of measure is defined in the Warehouse Master Data Parameters (whwmd0100s000) session.

Height

The outer height of the package expressed in the location length unit of measure.

Default value

0

Height

The unit in which the height is measured. The unit of measure is defined in the Warehouse Master Data Parameters (whwmd0100s000) session.

Volume

The volume of an item.

The volume is equal to Length multiplied with Width multiplied with Height of the Packaging Item. The volume is rounded up and is expressed in the Length unit.
