Handling Unit Lots and Serials (whwmd5136m000)

Use this session to register the lot codes or serial numbers contained in the current handling unit.

To link serial numbers, on the appropriate menu, choose Link Serial(s). The Serialized Items (tcibd4501m000) session starts, in which you can select the advised serial numbers and link the numbers to the handling unit.

Handling Unit
A uniquely identifiable physical unit that consists of packaging and contents. A handling unit can contain items registered in Warehousing and other handling units. A handling unit has a structure of packaging materials used to pack items, or is a part of such a structure.

A handling unit includes the following attributes:

  • Identification code
  • Packaging item (optional)
  • Quantity of packaging items (optional)

If you link an item to a handling unit, the item is packed by means of the handling unit. The packaging item refers to the type of container or other packing material of which the handling unit consists. For example, by defining a packaging item such as Wooden Crate for a handling unit, you specify that the handling unit is a wooden crate.

Item
In LN, the raw materials, subassemblies, finished products, and tools that can be purchased, stored, manufactured, sold, and so on.

An item can also represent a set of items handled as one kit, or exist in multiple product variants.

You can also define nonphysical items, which are not held in inventory but can be used to post costs or to invoice services to customers. The following are examples of nonphysical items:

  • Cost items (for example, electricity)
  • Service items
  • Subcontracting services
  • List items (menus/options)

Quantity in Inventory Unit
The unit of measure in which the inventory of an item is recorded, such as piece, kilogram, box of 12, or meter.

The inventory unit is also used as the base unit in measure conversions, especially for conversions that concern the order unit and the price unit on a purchase order or a sales order. These conversions always use the inventory unit as the base unit. An inventory unit therefore applies to all item types, also to item types that cannot be kept in stock.

Serial Number
The unique identification of a single physical item. LN uses a mask to generate the serial number. The serial number can consist of multiple data segments that represent, for example, a date, model and color information, sequence number, and so on.

Serial numbers can be generated for items and for tools.

Link Serial(s)
Use this command to start the Serialized Items (tcibd4501m000) session to link serial numbers to the items of the handling unit.
Generate Serials
Generates serial numbers for the high volume serialized items of the handling unit. The number of generated serial numbers is equal to the item quantity. For example, if the quantity is five, LN generates five serial numbers.

You can only generate serial numbers if the item is serialized. An item is serialized if the Serialized check box is selected for the item in the Item - General (tcibd0101s000) session.

Generate Lot Codes
Generates a new lot code and inserts the generated lot code in all empty Lot fields.
Split Serials
Use this command to create a line and generate a serial number for each item if the item is a high volume serialized item. The number of lines and serial numbers that is created is equal to the quantity of items. Example: If the quantity is five, five lines are created and five serial numbers are generated.
