Function: Packing

In this function, packing activities are controlled based on the physical characteristics of the goods, customer expectations, or distribution/production requirements. You create shipping documents and initiate the actual shipment of goods.

Process: Pack goods (code: MWH06a)

The objective of this process is to pack goods according instructions. After you pack the goods, you can rearrange the shipment accordingly.

When (re)arranging the shipments and loads (process DWH008), it is possible to make use so-called ‘ shipping containers’ to define the shipping structure (process DWH018 – Compose Shipping Container Structure). A shipping container usually represents a (physical) level between shipments and loads, where a shipping container may contain multiple shipments and a load can consist of multiple shipping containers; but this not fixed and can vary from scenario to scenario.

In addition, you can also generate all types of accompanying documents here. The documents can relate to only the packages, for example, a packing slip or an indication that an item is hazardous or heavy, but these documents can also include the generation of official transport documents.

If you use handling units, you can compose these units here. You can change the handling unit structure in such a way that the structure fits the customer requirements.

Assumptions:

  • You can use this process in environments in which multiple shipments occur on a daily basis. In these environments, you will want to invest some time in combining shipments into loads so you can save money on the transportation side.
