Function: Receipt

In this function, all operational activities are controlled from the moment goods are announced as shipped to the warehouse until the moment goods are ready to be stored in a warehouse storage or inspection area. This function controls the unloading of trucks and the checking of items and packing material quantities against expected orders, carrier paperwork, and hazardous material identification. If advance shipping notices (ASNs) are available, these notices will be used to select the corresponding expected inbound orders. If an expected order was not delivered completely, this function can determine whether more goods are expected shortly. Otherwise, the receipt can be closed.

Process: Receive goods, advanced (code: MWH01a)

The objective of this process is to handle physical receipt of goods at the warehouse in an advanced environment. In this environment, several receipts are carried out each day, so high volumes are supported. Every new receipt is registered and, if expected, a goods-received note is printed to get the details of the purchase order involved. You can use this note to check whether all items are received and also to note differences, if any. If ASNs are used, you can also link the ASNs to the receipt. Actual data is recorded and you must confirm receipt to complete the receiving process.

Because the goods are received in a receipt location (dock), you must subsequently run the store goods process ( Function: Storage) to transfer the goods from the receiving location to the final storage location.

In addition, you can also fulfill possible cross-dock orders here. When goods are allocated on the staging location, then by means of a cross-dock order, you can transfer the goods from the receipt location immediately to the staging location without storing the goods first in a storage location.

If items must be inspected before being stored, you must subsequently run the allocation process to transfer the goods from the receiving location to the inspection location, and then carry out the inspection process ( Function: Inspection).

To be able to carry out the process properly, make sure that all the activities used in this process are set up as a part of the warehouse order type that is used for receipt.

When you work with handling units, such as pallets and boxes, you can also receive the pallets and boxes instead of receiving orders. By selecting the handling unit, several activities such as ‘ print goods received note’ and ‘ confirm receipt’ are possible.

Assumptions:

  • The warehouse has locations, therefore, goods are unloaded at a receiving location, after which the goods are stored in another, more permanent location or cross-docked to the staging location.
  • If unexpected receipts occur, you can unload the goods and register the goods in the system. However, you cannot inbound the goods completely until you know where the shipment comes from and to whom the shipment belongs.
  • When working with handling units, the receipt should be made for these handling units.

Process: Receive goods, basic (code: MWH01b)

In this variant, only the required activities are performed. The basic receipt process is used in a rather simple warehouse environment, where goods are stored at random, without a complex system of locations behind the process. Therefore, the total inbound process is finished when the receipt is confirmed. No subsequent inbound processes are performed afterwards.

Assumptions:

  • You cannot receive goods that are not expected. These goods will be refused. In addition, you cannot use this procedure to receive handling units. To receive unexpected goods or handling units, you must use the more advanced business process.
