Configuring MIME types

If a file type is not defined on your system, use this procedure to add it.

MIME types are a standard way of identifying the file or content types that are recognized by your system. MIME stands for Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions, based on its origin as a way to identify file attachments to emails. A MIME type has two parts, a type and a subtype, separated by a forward slash. By configuring MIME types, you can control the types of attachments that users can upload into the system. You can use MIME types to reduce the chance of malicious attachments such as executable files.

As delivered, all MIME types are active. Review the MIME types to determine what applies to your organization.

  1. Select Configuration Console > Data Area > MIME Types.
  2. Click Create.
  3. Specify this information:
    Effective Date

Select the date that the MIME type is effective.

    MIME Type

Specify the MIME type declaration. The format is the MIME type followed by the subtype. For example, application/ms-PowerPoint or image/tiff.

    Super Type

Select the super type from the list of MIME types.

    Extensions

Specify the file extensions that are used by this MIME type.

    Default Extension

Specify the default file extension for the MIME type.

    Status

Select the status of the MIME type.

  4. Click Save.
To prevent users from attaching certain types of files, you can delete the MIME type or change the status.
    • To delete a MIME type, right-click the MIME type, select Delete, and click OK.
    • To change the status of a MIME type, right-click the MIME type and select Update. From the Status menu, select a status and click Save. If a MIME type is inactive, users see it in lists, but cannot use it. If a MIME type is blocked, users do not see it listed.
