Pushing out .msi from the Active Directory

The computer you want to work with has to exist in the organization unit (OU) where you link your policy.

  1. Create an installation point on a server. To do this, you need to create a shared folder then copy the installation package to the created folder.
  2. Open the Group Policy Management tool for the OU where you want to install the .msi file. In the Active Directory Users and Computers window, right-click the UE folder, then select Properties.
  3. On the Group Policy tab in the UE Properties window, click Open.
  4. Create a new Group Policy object. Right-click the UE folder and select Create and Link a GPO Here....
  5. Specify a name a click OK.
  6. Right-click the newly created Group Policy Object and select Edit.
  7. Expand the Computer Configuration > Software Settings field.
  8. Right-click Software Installation and select Properties.
  9. On the General tab, type the location of the folder you have created earlier (which serves as the default package location) and click the Display and Deploy Software dialog box.
  10. Under Installation User Interface Options, select Basic and click OK.
  11. In the left panel, right-click Software Installation and select New > Package.
  12. Specify the name of the .msi package to be installed.
  13. Under Deployment State field, select Assigned.
  14. Go back to Group Policy Management then select the OU where you want to link the created policy.
  15. Click Link an Existing GPO then choose the policy you have created or edited if it is not already linked.
