Working with Item Supersede References
A supersede reference is a value that represents one or more inventory items.
Supersede references follow these rules:
- An inventory item can have multiple supersede references.
- Multiple inventory items can have the same item as a supersede reference.
For example, item ABC can have these supersede references:
- 100.67
- Hammer
Another item, for example, item XYZ, can also have the item hammer as a supersede reference.
Additionally, the item hammer can also have its own supersede reference, for example, the item mallet. When an item that is used as a supersede reference also has its own supersede reference, a supersedes chain is created.
In Service Management, when you specify an item that has a supersede reference in a Service Order planned material transaction, and that item has insufficient quantity in the current warehouse, the Supersedes Availability modal form is displayed in which you can select a warehouse where quantity is available for the item. After you select a warehouse, the planned material transaction is updated and the Material Availability form is displayed in which you can create a transfer order to transfer the required quantity from the selected warehouse.
If there is insufficient quantity in other warehouses, or if you close the Supersedes Availability modal form, the next supersede reference is evaluated. If multiple references are found, the Supersede Cross Reference modal form is displayed in which you must select from the grid which reference item is to be used for the planned material transaction. After you select the row, the planned material transaction is updated with the selected reference item.
