About Obsolete and Slow-Moving Inventory
This topic describes obsolete and slow-moving inventory.
By developing business processes to identify some items as Obsolete or Slow Moving, you can:
- Obtain greater control over your inventory
- Gain better visibility into your inventory
The system supports this process by providing:
- A Material Status field on the Items form Controls tab where you can flag items as Active, Obsolete, or Slow Moving. (You can also use the Change Item Status Utility to flag a range of items.)
- A Reason Code field that allows you to track why items are being flagged as obsolete or slow-moving.
- The name of the user who last changed the Material Status field.
- Date of the last Material Status change.
Controls on Obsolete and Slow-Moving Inventory
After items have been flagged as obsolete, the system regulates their use by:
- Preventing them from being displayed in Item fields
- Preventing you from manufacturing or purchasing the items
- Warning you before you accept an obsolete item as a return
- Preventing you from selling or transferring an obsolete item.
After items have been flagged as slow moving, the system regulates their use by:
- Warning you before you make or buy the item
- Warning you before you accept a slow-moving item as a return
Several system functions that build inventory prevent you from adding an obsolete item.
