Sampling

Sampling is one of the most communication-intensive phases of product development. A proto goes out, comments come back, the team requests a revised sample, and the cycle repeats, sometimes four or five times, before approval.

Without a structured process, this loop depends on email chains. Attachments get lost. Comments get misread. The team is not sure which version of the specification the supplier uses.

The request process in PLM for Fashion formalizes this loop without adding bureaucracy. The request process gives the team a clear record of the content sent, the recipient, the due date, and the returned response. The request process also automates as much content as possible. Therefore, the team does not spend an hour assembling a tech pack.

Each request is for a product and supplier. Information already captured on the style, material, or trim is pulled in automatically. The request process covers style samples, cost quotations (FOB, sectionized, or BOM-level), purchase orders, performance tests for styles, materials, and trims, and labdip requests for materials. You can do all of this without the request process, but you have less visibility.
