Scenarios

When enabled in the settings, colors that are associated with a related record (you can check by looking at the Relations contextual pane) cannot be used by another related record.

When you create a variant from a record with the setting enabled, you cannot select the colorways cluster, and the colors from the source record is not copied to the created variant.

When you update the colorways of a variant and when you search for colors from the source record or other related variant in the Color Library or Color Palette Library, these colors are not displayed and cannot be used on the variant. This also applies when you update the source record and search for colors that are assigned to related variant records.

These examples explain how the setting works when creating variants and updating their colorways.

For example, color A001 is assigned to source record S0001. If you open a variant of S0001 and search for color A001 in the Color Library or Color Palette Library, the color A001 is not displayed. You cannot add that color to the variant's colorways.

Another example, color B001 is assigned to variant V0001. You open variant V0002, which shares the same source record as V0001, and search for color B001 in the Color Library or Color Palette Library. The color is not displayed in the search results, and you cannot add that color to variant V0002's colorways.

Variant V0001 has the color C001. When you open V0001's source record S0002 and search for C001 on the Color Library or Color Palette Library, the color is not displayed and you cannot add it to S0002's colorways.

When a color is deleted from a related record (whether a source or a variant), the color can be searched and added on other related records (source or variant).

Here are some examples to explain further.

You delete color A001 in source record S0001. You can now add that color to other related records.

You deleted color A0002 in variant V0001. You can now add that color to the source record's colorways or to the colorways of other related variants.

In cases where all colors are assigned to related records (source and variants), you will get empty search results when you update the colorways of any of the related records.

When you created a variant from a carryover style record, the colors that cannot be used start from the carryover record, not from the source record of the carryover. In this case, the carryover record becomes the source record of the variant and only those colors assigned to the source are excluded for use by the variant - the variant can use the colors of the source carryover record.

Note: This setting for distinct colors on parent and variant records does not affect the behavior of the Mass Update functionality. When a source record contains a color that exists in a related record of the target record, then that color can still be added to the target record.

For example, you have:

  • A parent record STYLE 001 with colors A001, A002, and A003
  • A variant record STYLE 001-01 with colors B001, B002, and B003
  • An unrelated record STYLE 002 with colors A001, C002, and C003

You run Mass Update with STYLE 002 as the source record, and STYLE 001-01 as the target record. The variant record STYLE 001-01 will now have the colors B001, B002, B003, A001, C002, and C003, even if color A001 already exists in parent record (STYLE 001) of the variant record (STYLE 001-01).
