Merchant category code
A merchant category code (MCC) is a four-digit, universal code that is assigned to merchants who accept credit cards. The MCC identifies the type of goods they sell. For example, the MCC for a grocery store can be #5411 for grocery stores and supermarkets.
When administrators assign merchant groups, including MCC to procurement cards, they restrict the card use to the merchants in that group.
When setting up a merchant group, you can indicate whether to identify merchants by name or by MCC. If you identify them by name, then bank charges are only accepted for a merchant with that name. If you identify them by MCC, then for each purchase using the procurement card, the MCC code of the merchant and the MCC code of the procurement card are compared. If the codes are different, then the purchase is prohibited.
