Project funding structures
User Dimension 2 is used to track and maintain funding sources for project contracts if these conditions are true:
- You use Project Invoicing and Revenue or Grant Accounting, and
- You selected the Project Invoicing check box on the Options tab of the finance enterprise group
Project funding sources are defined in a parent-child hierarchy with in a project funding structure. You can create multiple structure hierarchies for project funding. One of the structures must be designated as the enterprise structure. The enterprise structure is the default structure for reporting basis. The enterprise structure must include all of the posting project funding sources. Additional structures can be created for reporting.
The reporting structure is defined by the structure hierarchies for project funding sources. For example, you can set up a project structure to include external and internal funding sources. External funding sources may include customers, grants, and loans. Internal funding sources may include foundation, tax, or capital funds.
Project contract funding sources include any external or internal funding sources. A funding source can represent these types of funding:
- A federal or state agency awarding grant funding
- An internal source of funding
- Other external funding sources, including customers, loans, or bonds
- A funding source for intercompany billing
You can build a hierarchy of project funding structures. A hierarchy is used to divide funding by external funding sources. For example, customers, grants, loans, and bonds. A hierarchy is used to divide internal funding sources. For example, tax funds, capital funds, and foundation funds. You can create multiple structures or reporting hierarchies. The structure hierarchy for the enterprise project funding source can be based on type of funding source. You can create additional structures by federal or grant agency, by region, by department, or by principle investigator.
