Global trade item number (GTIN)

A GTIN is a globally unique number that identifies a service or product. The product or service can be priced, ordered, or invoiced at any point in any supply chain. Products can include individual items and packaged quantities. An each, a box, or a case can have unique GTINs.

The GTIN contains the Global Location Number (GLN) plus the item number that is determined by the manufacturer. The GLN is assigned to the vendor by the GSI Standards Group for the manufacturer of the item.

GTINs can be 8, 12, 13 or 14 digits. The length of the GTIN must match the size that is defined by the GTIN structure used. For more information, see: http://www.gsl.org/barcodes/support/check_digit_calculator
