Customs duty
Customs duty is a tariff or tax that is imposed on specific commodities, financial
transactions, or goods purchased abroad.
Australia specifics
Imported alcohol, tobacco, fuel, and petroleum products are subject to customs duty at a rate that is equivalent to excise duty. This practice is to ensure that the goods are treated consistently with goods that are manufactured in Australia.
A list of custom duty rates is available in the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) website and rates can change regularly.
Claiming refunds, drawbacks, and remission for excise equivalent goods is allowed in certain circumstances.
In all situations, payment of customs duty is due when lodgement is due.
