Creating GTINs

Use this procedure to manually set up global trade item numbers. You can also import a CSV file using Item Master Load.

  1. Select Items > Manage Items > Item List.
  2. Open an item record.
  3. In the Global Trade Item Numbers section, click Create.
  4. Specify this information:
    GTIN
    Provide the GTIN format for this trade item. Valid values are: 8, 12, 13, 14.

    When creating the GTIN from a barcode, the GTIN is only a portion of the entire barcode. In GS1-128 barcodes, the solution identifier of 01 precedes the GTIN and other fields, such as the weight, must follow.

    Description
    Specify the brand owner's item-specific description of the product.
    GTIN Structure
    Select the GTIN structure. Valid values are GTIN 8, GTIN 12, GTIN 13, or GTIN 14.
    Use As Default Per Manufacturer Info and UOM
    This check box is automatically selected as the default value if multiple GTINs with the same manufacturing information, manufacturing number, and UOM combination exist. This check box is cleared if succeeding GTINs with the same combination exist when the item record is saved.
    Manufacturer Information
    Select the Manufacturer Code. This code represents the manufacturer of them item.

    Specify the Manufacturer Division. This code represents a division of a manufacturer that an item is tied to.

    Brand Name
    Provide the consumer-recognized name that is used by the brand owner to uniquely identify a line of trade items or services.
    Functional Name
    Provide a description of the way in which the product or service is used by the consumer.
    Abbreviated Description
    Provide an abbreviated description to identify the trade item at the point-of-sale or robotic distribution systems.
    Effective Date
    Select the date and time that the master data version information is valid.
    Date Available
    Select the date and time that the trade item is available from the supplier.
    Publication Date
    Select the date and time on which the associated static data is available for viewing and synchronization.
  5. On the Measurements tab, specify this information:
    Height
    Specify the vertical dimension from lowest to highest, including packaging. At a pallet level, the trade item height includes the height of the pallet.
    Width
    Specify the width measurement of the item.
    Depth
    Specify the depth measurement of the item.
    Gross Weight
    The gross weight includes the packaging materials of the trade item. At the pallet level, the trade item gross weight includes the weight of the pallet.
    Net Weight
    Specify the net weight of the trade item. The net weight applies to all levels except for the base level. The net weight excludes the packaging materials of the trade item. For the base unit, the net content measure replaces the net weight.
    Net Content
    Specify the amount of the trade item that is contained by a package, usually as claimed on the label. In the case of multi-packs, the label shows the net content of the total trade item. For fixed value trade items, the value is claimed on the package.

    Use net content to avoid variable fill rate issues. Fill rate issues can arise with some trade items that are sold by volume or weight. The content can vary slightly from batch to batch. In variable quantity trade items, net content indicates the average quantity. The net content must be associated with a valid UOM.

    Consumer Unit
    Select this check box if the current hierarchy level of a trade item is intended for consumption.
    Orderable Unit
    Select this check box if the item is an orderable unit.
    Invoice Unit
    Select this check box if this item is included on the billing invoice.
    Shipping Unit
    Select this check box if the item is a dispatch or shipping unit.
    Returnable
    Select this check box if the item has returnable packaging.
    Base Unit
    Select this check box if the item is at the base unit level of the trade item hierarchy.
    Variable Unit
    Select this check box if the item does not have a fixed quantity.
  6. On the Miscellaneous tab, specify this information:
    Target Country
    Select the country code that identifies the target market. The target market is at country level or higher geographical definition and is where a trade item is intended to be sold.
    Batch or Lot Required
    Select whether the base trade item contains these issues:
    • A batch or lot number that is required by law
    • A batch or lot number is allocated
    • No batch or lot number is allocated
    Diet or Allergen
    If there are diet or allergen notes on the package, then specify the type.
    Latex Indicator
    Select whether the package indicates that the item contains latex.
    Reusability Code
    Select the manner in which an item can be reused.
    Parent GTIN
    Select the GTIN of the parent trade item of the current item in a GTIN hierarchy.
    Brand Owner GLN
    Select the GLN for the brand owner of the trade item.
    Information Provider GLN
    Select the trading partner who is responsible for the GTIN message or information.
  7. Click Save.
