Global location number (GLN) records

A Global Location Number (GLN) is a globally unique 13-digit number that identifies an entity or location. This number can be used for any of these:

  • a physical location, such as a warehouse
  • a legal entity, such as a company or customer
  • a function that takes place within a legal entity
  • to identify something as specific as a particular storage location, such as a bin

Because not all trading partner support GLN usage, GLNs are not used in EDI transactions. Their use must be specifically enabled by trading partner or for all trading partners. A GS1 GLN executive summary is located at http://www.gs1.org/sites/default/files/docs/idkeys/GS1_GLN_Executive_Summary.pdf. See http://www.gs1.org for more information.
