Work assignment synchronization
The Work Assignment Synchronization setting automates the synchronizing of work assignment data with the data on the associated job and position for the effective dates after the initiating transaction. When a work assignment is synchronized, the record is updated with any later-dated changes from jobs and positions that cascade to the work assignment as defined by the default rules. This feature applies those later-dated changes to a work assignment. The action of "SyncToPosOrJob" displays in the work assignment audit logs. After an organization enables this feature, no additional actions are required of the user.
When a work assignment is added or when the position is changed on the work assignment, the default rules from the related job and position are applied. These default rules control which fields cascade to the work assignment from the job and position on the effective date of the initiating transaction.
When the work assignment synchronization feature is enabled, work assignment synchronization happens automatically when:
-
A new work assignment is added.
-
The position code is changed on a work assignment.
With a default rule of "No Default," the field values in the job or position should not cascade to the work assignment through work assignment synchronization. With a default rule of "Default No Override," the field values in the job or position should always cascade to the work assignment through work assignment synchronization. With a default rule of "Default with Override," the field values in the job or position could cascade to the work assignment through work assignment synchronization.
"Default with Override" default rules, paired with your work assignment synchronization option and the field data over time determines whether existing changes on a job or position are applied to a work assignment through the work assignment synchronization process. If you selected the "Synchronize Overrides" option, field values from the job or position cascade to the work assignment if the values in the work assignment and position are in sync before the date of the next change, even if they were out of sync at the time of the initiating transaction. If you selected the "Do Not Synchronize Overrides" option, field values from the job or position are ignored if you have overridden the field in the initiating transaction.
For example, both the Direct Manager and Indirect Manager fields are defined with a rule of "Default with Override." This table shows a set of transactions that exist for a given position.
Effective Date | Direct Manager | Indirect Manager |
---|---|---|
1/1/2014 | 10 | 5 |
7/1/2014 | 3 | 7 |
9/1/2015 | 2 | 4 |
With an effective date of June 1, 2014, an employee is hired into this position with these values.
Effective Date | Direct Manager | Indirect Manager |
---|---|---|
6/1/2014 | 3 | 6 |
The work assignment audit log shows these results:
Work assignment synchronization is disabled:

---|---|---|
6/1/2014 | 3 | 6 |
7/1/2014 | 3 | 6 |
