Indirect managers and the matrix structure
You can track indirect reporting relationships by having managers that are independent of the organizational structure. Indirect managers are secondary managers on a resource's work assignment that supervise the resource for a specific aspect of a work assignment.
An indirect manager must be associated with a work assignment. Indirect manager relationships are not displayed in the basic manager structure. The basic manager structure consists only of direct reports and exists whether any resources are assigned or report to the various manager roles.
You can view indirect manager relationships on a resource's work assignment. Indirect relationships are indicated by the dotted-line symbol on the employee card view on the My Staff page.
Example
Elise is a support staff in the Contract department. They are assigned to a cross-functional process improvement team that involves all the departments in the Sales division. The team is supervised by the Sales Division Manager. Their work assignment for this project lists the Contract Department Manager as their direct manager and the Sales Division Manager as the indirect manager. Their name is displayed on the manager structure as a direct report to the Contract Department manager.
