Prerequisites for benefit plans

Benefit plans can be defined with one or more prerequisites. For example, if an organization has a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) and a Health Savings Account (HSA), employees cannot enroll in the HSA unless they are first enrolled in the HDHP. On the HSA plan, the HDHP plan is a prerequisite.

A benefit plan can have multiple prerequisites from which employees can choose. For example, multiple High Deductible Health Plans (HDHP) are available as prerequisite options for a Health Savings Account (HSA) plan. The employee must enroll in one of the prerequisite plans to enroll in the HSA.

Coverage options can be used as additional prerequisites when setting up a benefit plan:

  • If the Prerequisite Coverage and Coverage options are individual, then the employee must enroll in the Individual Dental Plan to enroll in the Individual’s High Deductible Health Plan.
  • The Prerequisite Coverage Option and Coverage Option can be different. For example, the employee can have Individual Dental Plan as a requirement to enroll in a Family Health Plan. The employee must enroll in the Prerequisite Coverage Option to select the coverage option of the selected plan.
  • Any Vision plan is a prerequisite to any High Deductible Plan if both Prerequisite Coverage and Coverage Option have no value.
