Defining goal types

Use goal types to indicate whether goals are developmental, personal, and so on. Goal types are used for organizational and resource goals.

  1. Access Administrator > Setup > Goals > Goal Types.
  2. Click New.
  3. On the Goal Type form, use the following guidelines to specify field values:
    Effective Date

    Required. Type the date on which the goal type becomes effective.

    Goal Type

    Required. Type an abbreviation or short description of the goal type; for example, Developmental.

    Description

    Type a description for the goal type

    Rated

    Select this check box if you want the goal to be rated.

    Rated goal types can also be used for performance appraisal goals and for bonus objectives.

    Note: 

    If a goal type is flagged as used for bonus objectives, it is also automatically flagged as rated.

    Rating Scale

    You can select a default rating scale to be used for resource goals that use this goal type.

    Use For Bonus Objectives

    Select this check box if you want this goal type used for bonus objectives. If you place a check here, the Rated box will automatically be checked also. You can use multiple goal types for bonus objectives.

    Bonus objectives can be created in Goal Management or in Compensation.

    Note: 
    • From Compensation, you will only be able to select a goal type where only Use For Bonus Objectives is selected (Use Action Plan, Use External Results, and Approve Goals By Year are not selected).

    • If you want to use for bonus objectives a goal type that has all or any these options selected (besides Use For Bonus Objectives), you must create the resource goals in Goal Management, then you will be able to attach the goals to a bonus period in Compensation.

    Use Action Plan

    (Appears only if Goal Action Plans is selected on the organization's Configurable Features tab) If you select this option, resource goals specified for this goal type are able to use action plans.

    Note: 

    If you select this option, a goal year will be required for organizational or resource goals that use this goal type. On the goal year, you will be able to require action plans for this goal type.

    Approve Goals By Year

    Resource goals created for goal types where this option is selected will be submitted and approved as a group of goals

    Note: 

    If you select this option, a goal year will be required for organizational or resource goals that use this goal type.

    Use External Results

    (Appears only if Goal External Results is selected on the organization's Configurable Features tab) If you select this option, resource goals specified for this goal type will have their rating determined by external results.

    Note: 

    If you select this option, a goal year will be required for organizational or resource goals that use this goal type.

    Manager Can Update

    Select this option to enable managers to update submitted goals.

    Employee Actions That Require Manager Approval

    Select an employee action or actions that will require manager approval.

  4. Click Save.
