Creating skills

Create rating scales and qualification sources before you create skills. If you are using attributes, create attribute types.

  1. Select Administrator > Qualifications > Skills
  2. Click Create, and specify this information:
    Effective Date
    Specify the effective date.
    Skill
    Specify the skill name.

    You can also specify a description or use the skill name as the default for the description.

    Short Description
    The default is from the skill. This field is used in lists of resource skills and on a competency model summary.
    Description
    The default is from the short description. This field in resources lists of skills and on a competency model summary.
    Active
    Select this check box to make the skill active. The skill is active by default. If you do not want the skill to be selectable yet, clear the check box.
    Include Performance Indicators
    Select this check box to include performance indicators in the skill.

    If you include performance indicators, you can create proficiencies for each performance indicators. If you do not include performance indicators you can create proficiencies for the skill.

    Category
    Select the appropriate qualification category.
    Source
    Select the skill's qualification source. This is the default for the resource skill.
    Region
    Select a region in which this skill is valid.
    Rating Scale
    To rate a resource that demonstrates this skill, select a rating scale.
    Default Comparison Level
    Select the rating scale level that represents the minimum acceptable performance for this skill.
    Candidate Display Indicator
    Select whether the skill is available to candidates. Leave this field blank to always show this skill.
    Renewal Cycle
    If the skill is renewable, select how often it must be renewed.
    Send Notification
    If the skill is renewable, specify how many notification days a resource is given before the skill must be renewed.
    Maintain Renewal Date If Within These Thresholds
    Select this check box to use the skill expiration date plus 1 day as the renewal date when the skill is renewed automatically as the outcome of completing a development or performance appraisal completion. If you select this option, you must provide a date range within which the automatic renewal must occur to maintain the original renewal date. If the skill is automatically renewed outside of this date range, or if this check box is not selected, the renewal date is the completion date of the activity or performance appraisal.
    Days before
    If you select Maintain Renewal Date If Within These Threshold, specify the maximum number of days before the skill expiration date within which the activity or performance appraisal that renews the skill must be completed to maintain the renewal date.
    Days after expiration date
    If you select Maintain Renewal Date If Within These Threshold, specify the maximum number of days after the skill expiration date within which the activity or performance appraisal that renews the skill must be completed to maintain the renewal date.
  3. Click Save.
    • If you selected Include Performance Indicators, you can specify performance indicators and then proficiencies. Go to step 4.
    • If you did not select Include Performance Indicators and selected a rating scale, you can specify proficiencies. Go to step 5.
  4. Optionally, define behaviors.
    Note: The Performance Indicators tab is only available if you selected Include Performance Indicators.
    1. On the Performance Indicators tab, click Create.
    2. Specify this information:

      Proficiencies and Attributes tabs are displayed in the performance indicator.

      A proficiency level is automatically created for each level in the rating scale

    3. Optionally, update the proficiency levels to add statements to the performance indicator.
      • For each level to which to add a statement, specify a statement with an effective date and click Save.
    4. Optionally, add attributes to the performance indicator, as described in step 6.
    5. Repeat steps a through d until you have defined all of the performance indicators.
  5. Click Save.
  6. Optionally ,create proficiencies.
    • After the skill is saved, if Include Performance Indicators is not selected and a rating scale is associated, a proficiency is created for each level within the rating scale. Add a proficiency statement with an effective date for each level and click Save.
  7. Optionally, create attributes for the skill.

    You can add attributes at the skill level, and, if performance indicators are included, at each performance indicator level.

    1. On the Attributes tab, click Create.
    2. Specify this information:
      Attribute Type
      Optionally, select the attribute type for the attribute.
      Effective date
      Specify the effective date.
      Description
      Specify a short description for the attribute. This is the text that appears on the Attributes tab.
      Long Description

      Optionally ,specify a longer description. For example, if the attribute is about personal development, you can add more detailed suggestions in this field. The default value is from the description.

      URL
      Specify a website URL where more information is located.
    3. Click Save.
    4. Repeat steps a, b, and c for each attribute to define.
  8. Click the Used By tab to view the jobs, positions, competency groups, and resources with which the skill is associated.
  9. Click the Resources tab to view a list of the resources with which this skill is associated.
