Entry types

Entry types are used to determine the exact date on which an individual can enroll in a plan. If you specify entry types, an individual's benefit start date must exactly match a plan entry point. Entry types may be used with or without a waiting period, and include one of these:

  • No Entry Points: Individual can get into a benefit plan on any date when they become eligible.
  • Up to 12 specific entry points. This method can be used to limit enrollments to the first of each month, or the first of the year. This may be the entry point prior to or after the waiting period is satisfied.
  • Prior Pay Period, Next Pay Period: The start date of a pay period, based on the individual's payment schedule. This may be the pay period prior to or after the beginning date, or (if applicable) prior to or after the waiting period is satisfied.
  • Prior Work Period, Next Work Period: The start date of a work period, based on the individual's payment schedule. This may be the work period prior to or after the beginning date, or, if applicable, prior to or after the waiting period is satisfied.
  • First Of Month, First Of Next Month: The first day of the month or the first day of the next month.
  • Next Entry Point: If the date calculated is an entry point, use that date.
  • Next Entry Point Inclusive: This check box is displayed when Entry Type is Next Entry Point and the date falls on an entry point. If you do not select the Next Entry Point Inclusive check box, then the next entry point is used. If the Next Entry Point Inclusive check box is selected, then the entry point that matches the date is used.

For example, if Date Type is Other Date 1, Entry Type is Next Entry Point, and all entry points are the first of each month, then employee's Other Date 1 is 07/01/2018. If the Next Entry Point Inclusive check box is not selected, the eligibility start date is 08/01/2018. If the Next Entry Point Inclusive check box is selected, the eligibility start date is 07/01/2018.

Another example: Entry dates are on the first of each month and an individual's eligibility date is calculated to be January 15. If you select a Prior value (such as Prior Entry Point), the eligibility benefit is added for the individual with a start date of January 1. If you select a Next value (such as Next Entry Point), the eligibility benefit is added for the individual with a start date of February 1, unless Next Entry Point Inclusive is checked and the start date falls on the entry point.
