Adding elements to a hierarchy

  1. Select Dashboards > Data Integrations > OLAP Modeling.
  2. Select the model to administer.
  3. Select the hierarchy to administer.
  4. On the Elements tab, click + Add.
To add multiple elements, you can click + Add multiple times and then add the details of the elements.
  5. Specify this information:
    Element Name
Specify the name of the element.
    Type
Specify whether the element is a numeric or string element.
    Parent
Select the element's parent element. You can add elements to multiple parents. For example, add a product to a product group and to a Special Offers group.
    Weight
    Optionally, specify the element's weight.
    Order
To specify elements' positions in the hierarchy, edit the values in the Order column. Elements that you add to multiple parents can be ordered differently under each parent.
  6. Click Save.

With the Weight property, you can determine how child elements contribute to the aggregation of their parent element.

If no weight is specified, the weight is defaulted to 1 when you publish the model to OLAP. That is, the child's value is fully included in the parent’s aggregation.

You can assign these weights to modify how a child’s value affects its parent:

  • 1: Full contribution. We recommend that you use 1 weight for standard aggregations.
  • 0: No contribution. We recommend that you use 0 weight for statistical accounts to prevent inclusion.
  • -1: Subtraction, for example, Cost of Sales in the Gross Profit. We recommend that you use -1 weight for subtractive elements such as expenses.
  • 0.5: Partial contribution.

Assigning the weight is useful in financial hierarchies in which certain accounts, such as expenses require subtraction from totals, or statistical accounts require exclusion from aggregations.
