Editing charts

When you have created a chart, you cannot return to the Chart Wizard to make changes. Instead, you use the Data Source dialog.

  1. In Design Mode, double-click the chart to edit. A hashed border is displayed.
  2. Right-click and select Data Source.

If the chart data is held in hyperblocks, one series is displayed in the List of Series pane. The series shows the references of the cells from which the chart takes its data. If the chart data is held in spreadsheet cells, there is a series for each column or row of data.

You can edit the cell references as required. For example, if you add an additional row of data to the spreadsheet, or add a cell to a hyperblock.

The Data Source dialog has these options:

Sample Data
To add or remove sample data from the chart in Design Mode, click Sample Data to display the Sample Data dialog. You can match the number of sample series and categories to the actual data. You might find this helpful if you want to format the appearance of each data series individually.
By formatting each sample series in Design Mode, you do not need to switch between Design and View modes to check your formatting. When you switch to View Mode, all the series are formatted as required.
You might also need change the sample data if, for example, you want to format each item in a chart legend, scale the Category axis, or if you enable animation on individual data series.
If you clear the Show sample data check box, the chart in Design Mode displays only the data visible in Design Mode. For example, if the data is in a hyperblock, only the Value cell of the hyperblock is visible in Design Mode, and so only one value is represented on the chart.
Add
If the chart data is held in spreadsheet cells and you add a row or column of data which should be included in the chart, click Add. The currently highlighted series is duplicated. You can then edit it to reflect the cell references of the new row or column.
Display message when chart area becomes too small
This option will warn you if a chart contains too many data series to display correctly. It applies to charts with 1000 data series or more.
Display hidden data
You might want to exclude some of your data from a chart.
To exclude a column or row of data from a chart:
  1. Hide the column or row in the spreadsheet.
  2. Clear the Display hidden data check box.
If you re-enable Display hidden data, the chart displays the data in the hidden columns or rows.
