Lists

The elements of a multidimensional database are held in dimensions and hierarchies. You create lists from the dimensions and hierarchies in the Database Structure pane. You then drag lists into reports to create hyperblocks or to populate other list objects.

When you drag a list into a report it is copied into a local list. If you use the Create Hyperblock Wizard, you can specify the scope of the list definition as Local list or Global list.

Note: The distinction between local and global lists does not apply to lists in slices.

Often, you do not want to use a complete list in a report. For example, if you have a list of time periods, you might want to display only the years or the quarters, but not the months, weeks etc. So, Application Studio contains list designers that you use to specify which elements different types of list contain. You can design lists before or after inserting them into reports.

In the Server List Designer you design server, custom and variable lists. You can drag dimensions and hierarchies from the Database Structure pane into a report, to create server list-based hyperblocks or to populate other list objects.

In the Relational List Designer you design lists based on relational data sources.

Lists can be valid for the entire Report Catalog (global lists) or for one report only (local lists).

In reports, you display lists in list objects such as combo boxes, list boxes and hyperblocks.
